10 Digit Dialing Information

The FCC has adopted 988 as a new three-digit quick number to be used nationwide reaching the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline. In order for 988 to work properly in your area code, 10-digit dialing must be implemented.

What will be the new dialing procedure?

To complete all local calls, you will need to dial area code + telephone. This applies to all calls within your area code that are currently dialed with seven digits.

When will the change begin?

Beginning April 24, 2021 there will be a permissive period allowing you to dial both ways; however, effective October 24th, 2021 it will be mandatory to dial all 10-Digits. On and after this date, local calls dialed with only 7-digits will not be completed. A recording will inform you that your call cannot be completed as dialed.

What will you need to do?

Any automatic dialing equipment or other types of equipment that are programmed to complete calls to 7-digit local numbers will need to be reprogrammed to complete calls. Examples include: life safety systems, medical monitoring devices, PBXs, fax machines, fire or burglar alarm and security systems, speed dialers, call forwarding settings, and voicemail settings.

Calls to 911, 811, 411, and 211 will not be affected.
